By half twelve, Juliette couldnât quite believe how popular the little cake stall had been. She glanced over their rapidly depleting stock and cringed at Caitlin.
âWorry not. Iâve some more on the go back at the shop.â Caitlin tapped her nose.
Once again, Juliette had been in her element, chatting to the visitors, and, if it was clear they were holidaymakers, she made sure to tell them to visit the museum too, after the weekend.
Morag appeared at one thirty so that Juliette could have a spot of lunch and a wander around the other stalls and attractions. Grace had arrived to help Morag and Caitlin had gone back to the bakery to check on the ovens. Juliette wasnât exactly hungry as sheâd already munched on tiffin that Caitlin and Grace had made especially for the day, but the chance to have a walk around was welcome.
âLadies and gentlemen, the childrenâs talent contest will take place in the main marquee at three oâclock. You donât want to miss it,â Kenneth announced over the sound system as she walked towards Archieâs stall to look at the flowers.
âAh, Miss Jules. You wonât have met Kendric MacKinnon, will you?â Archie said as she approached.
A tall, broad-shouldered man, wearing jeans and a pale blue shirt, stood with his back towards her. He turned round as Archie mentioned him by name, and when she was greeted by the full view of him, Juliette half expected Barry White music to play and for the sun to glint off his perfect white teeth.
He smiled warmly. âJules? The dog saver?â
She scrunched her brow as she wondered how he knew this already and if everyone on Skye was as obsessed with their canine companions as they were here. She nodded and he continued.
âGood to meet you. Iâm Kendric, Iâve been told youâre quite the hero to my nephew, Evin.â He had the most lilting accent, more subtle than Reidâs, and very smiley eyes. He held out his long, tanned hand. She could immediately see what Caitlin had meant about his striking good looks. He was definitely movie-star material, although there was no movie star, or famous man for that matter, to whom she could compare him. All she knew was that he was probably the best-looking man sheâd ever laid eyes on â she sent up a quick apology to Laurie, who she knew would simply laugh at her goggle-eyed stare and tell her to stop catching flies.
âIs the sun getting to you too, Jules?â Archie asked, snapping her back to reality.
She touched her hair, then her forehead as her cheeks almost spontaneously combusted through embarrassment. âOh, good grief, yes, I think it must be. Iâm so sorry. Jules Fairhurst. Lovely to meet you too, Kendric.â She shook his hand. He had a very firm grasp and smooth skin.
Bloody hell, get a grip, will you?
âThereâs no wonder. Itâs such a scorcher today.â
âIt is.â She glanced around. âIs Reid not with you?â
Kendric frowned and cleared his throat. âAh, no, heâs⦠ermâ¦â
âStill down with the flu?â she interjected, not wishing to force him to explain things.
